    Neem tree leaves

Neem oil is a natural plant oil pressed from the seeds of the neem tree. It's one of the gentler sprays for a veggie patch β€” a good first port of call once a pest problem gets past hand-picking and a blast of water.

    Pests it manages:

Neem also has a mild fungicidal effect, so it can help with fungal problems like powdery mildew.

    How to use it:

    1. Mix it to the label β€” strength varies between brands, so follow the bottle.
    2. Spray in the cool of the morning or evening, never in the heat of the day. Wet both the tops and undersides of the leaves.
    3. Keep it off open flowers so you don't bother the bees.
    4. Repeat every 7–14 days while pests are active β€” neem works best on young, actively feeding insects.

    The good:

    • Low toxicity to people, pets and pollinators when used as directed.
    • Works on a broad range of common garden pests.
    • Doubles as a mild fungicide.
    • Breaks down quickly, so it doesn't build up in your soil.

    The catch:

    • It's not a knock-down spray β€” expect to reapply.
    • It won't clear a heavy infestation on its own.
    • Toxic to fish, so keep it well away from ponds and waterways.
