bitter melon in a raised bed

Bitter melon (bitter gourd) is a warty, distinctive gourd prized across Asian cooking for its unique bitterness. A vigorous, ornamental climber, it revels in a hot, humid summer up a strong trellis.

    Quick facts

    • Position: full sun, loves heat & humidity
    • Spacing: 40–50 cm apart
    • Tub depth: our 35 cm depth
    • Time to harvest: 12–16 weeks
    • Support: a strong trellis

When to plant: Bitter melon is frost-tender and heat-loving β€” plant from late spring through summer. It needs a long, warm season. Our free planting calendar shows the right months for your postcode.

Growing it in a raised bed: Plant into rich, warm mix at the base of a trellis and let it climb. Hand-pollinate a few female flowers in the morning if fruit set is poor.

Watering and feeding: Keep the mix moist through the warm season; it's a thirsty, vigorous grower.

Common pests: keep an eye out for aphids and fruit fly. Most are easily managed β€” see our safe pest guide.

Common diseases: the main ones are powdery mildew and mosaic virus. Good airflow, morning watering and steady moisture prevent most.

Companion plants: Give it a trellis of its own; grows well beside other cucurbits. See our companion planting guide.

Harvest and storage: Pick the fruit young and pale green for milder flavour, or riper for more bitterness β€” but before it turns orange and splits. Regular picking keeps it producing.

More growing guides: cucumbers, pumpkins and cucamelon.
