    watercress in a raised bed

Watercress is a peppery, super-nutritious green that loves constant moisture — and you don't need a stream. In a raised bed, just keep one damp corner permanently wet and it'll romp away.

    Quick facts

    • Position: part shade; loves constant moisture
    • Spacing: 10–15 cm apart
    • Tub depth: our 23 cm depth, kept wet
    • Time to harvest: 6–8 weeks

When to plant: Watercress grows in the cooler months in warm areas, spring to autumn in cooler ones. Sow or plant into a spot you can keep permanently damp. Our free planting calendar shows the right months for your postcode.

Growing it in a raised bed: Grow it in the wettest corner, or stand a pot in a saucer of water that you keep topped up. Rich, constantly moist soil is the whole secret. Pinch out flowers to keep the leaves coming.

Watering and feeding: Never let it dry out — watercress wants wet feet. Change or refresh the water occasionally to keep it sweet.

Common pests: keep an eye out for aphids and slugs and snails. Most are easily managed — see our safe pest guide.

Common diseases: the main one is downy mildew, usually from damp, crowded conditions. Good airflow and morning watering prevent most.

Companion plants: Give it a permanently moist spot; it grows well near other water-loving greens. See our companion planting guide.

Harvest and storage: Pick sprigs as you need them — regular cutting keeps it lush and stops it flowering. Use it fresh.

More growing guides: sorrel, spinach and lettuce.
