Grow Frame Raised Garden Bed or Planter Box - Timber | 1.8m frame

Our raised garden beds and planter boxes with a 1.8 m timber frame built in. Made to fit the mesh, net and cloth sold by the roll, so you can net it, cage it, shade it, wrap it or grow up it, and change it with the seasons.

Pick the Wide (157 x 110 cm, two tubs side by side) or the Large (157 x 60 cm, one full-length tub), at 80 cm planting height (a waist-high raised garden bed) or 50 cm (a knee-high planter box). On every one, all four legs run up in one piece to a timber top rail 1.8 m off the ground, so there is about 100 cm of clear headroom above an 80 cm bed and about 130 cm above a 50 cm planter box. On the Wide, a centre rail runs down the middle of the top so a net stays up off your plants and strings have an anchor over both tubs.

It comes as the frame, with nothing on it, so you only pay for the cover you want. Four separate bays and a top, all timber, so staples, screws, hooks, sail track and zip ties work anywhere on it. Shade one side, net another, wrap it for winter, string it up for climbers: build the micro-climate the spot needs and change it when the season does.

What can I use the frame for?

• Throw a net over it to keep birds and bats off your crop
• Staple fly screen or insect mesh to the sides
• Screw wire mesh panels into the bays
• Shade cloth for the summer heat
• Greenhouse film or frost cloth when it turns cold
• String-train tomatoes and cucumbers from the top rails
• Run wires or twine between the rails for beans and peas
• Fix reo panels to the sides and let the climbers cover it
• Hang pots and strawberry baskets from the top rail, right at picking height
• Run your drip line or misters along the top

Made to fit standard mesh rolls
Every side is one flat face: board at the bottom, rail at the top, legs either side. The gap between the board and the underside of the rail is 90 cm on an 80 cm raised garden bed and 120 cm on a 50 cm planter box, which are the widths mesh is sold in, so a roll goes on flat, edge to edge, no trimming. The long sides are 1.32 m between the legs; the ends are 1.10 m on the Wide and 0.60 m on the Large. About 4.9 m of roll goes round a Wide and 3.9 m round a Large, and one strip off a 90 cm roll covers the top of a Large.

Which roll for which job:

• Birds and possums: galvanised aviary mesh, 12 x 12 mm holes, 90 cm x 30 m roll, on the sides and the top.
• Rats and mice: mouse mesh, 6.5 x 6.5 mm holes, 900 mm x 5 m roll.
• Cats, dogs, chooks and rabbits: cage mesh, 25 x 25 mm holes, 90 cm x 30 m roll.
• Fruit fly, cabbage moth and aphids: fine insect net, wrapped right round with the top closed.
• Summer heat: 50% shade cloth on the hot side and the top.
• Frost and cold nights: frost cloth or clear greenhouse film, all round.
• A net to throw over the lot: wildlife-safe knitted bird net, holes 5 mm or smaller.
• Climbers: twine from the rim to the rail, or a 100 x 100 mm reo panel screwed to a side.

How much room is there for plants to grow?
The top rail is 1.8 m off the ground on every size, so there is about 100 cm from the top of an 80 cm raised garden bed to the rail, and about 130 cm above a 50 cm planter box. The planter box gives taller crops the most room, and climbers can keep going up the sides and along the top.

What net should I use?
A wildlife-safe one: white, knitted, with holes 5 mm or smaller when stretched. It keeps birds and bats off your fruit without trapping them. It is the rule in Victoria and good practice everywhere. To reach the top of the bed on every side, allow a net of at least about:

• Wide, 80 cm: 3.6 x 3.1 m
• Wide, 50 cm: 4.2 x 3.7 m
• Large, 80 cm: 3.6 x 2.6 m
• Large, 50 cm: 4.2 x 3.2 m

Go bigger if you would like some to tuck under. Keeping possums out takes wire mesh fixed to every side and the top rather than a net, and the frame is built to take it.

• Pre-drilled holes, so it all lines up first go

Can I put it on wheels?
Yes. Pick With wheels above and it comes on four heavy-duty 100 mm castors: two fixed at one end and two swivelling with brakes at the other, fitted so the wheels roll along the length of the bed. The legs are shortened to allow for the castors, so the frame is still 1.8 m tall and the planting height does not change. Wheels are available on the Wide with the 23 cm tub, on the 80 cm Large with any tub, and on the 50 cm Large with the 23 or 35 cm tub. The deeper Wide tubs get too heavy to roll.

How big is it?
Wide: 157 x 110 x 180 cm overall (length x width x height), with two tubs side by side. Large: 157 x 60 x 180 cm overall. Planting height 80 cm (waist high) or 50 cm (knee high), and a tub depth of 23, 35 or 41 cm.

What is it made from?
MicroPro H3 treated pine (MCA), the same timber as every Corrogarden bed. Inside sits our recycled plastic tub (two on the Wide): potting mix goes straight in and you can plant the same day, while the tub keeps the moisture off the timber so it lasts for years.

How does it get to me?
A built Grow Frame is too big to travel built, so we bring it flat on our own delivery run across South East Queensland, with the end frames already built and every hole pre-drilled. Put it together yourself with a drill and a spanner, or add Grow Frame Assembly on Delivery and we will build it on the spot during the run.
