Two beds' worth of growing space on one bed's patch of floor. Herbs and salad greens up top at 125 cm, part-shade lovers in the tub below, all on one set of timber legs.
This is freestanding vertical gardening: no wall, no fence, no drilling, so it suits renters too. Two of our timber tubbed boxes stack on four tall legs, which gives you a second garden bed above the first without using any more floor. Add braked castors and you can roll it into the sun as the seasons change.
We built the first one as a prototype in 2023 and showed it on Facebook. The people who saw it liked the same things: it saves space, you get two tubs to plant instead of one, and wheels let you follow the sun.
What is a two-tier vertical garden bed?
It is two of our standard tubbed boxes stacked on one set of four legs, with the same footprint as a single bed. Call it a tiered garden bed, a 2 tier raised garden bed or a tiered planter box: either way you get two real tubs of potting mix, one at 50 cm (knee height) and one at 125 cm (around chest height for most people).
How much room is there between the tiers?
About 52 cm of clear growing room between the rim of the bottom tub and the underside of the top tub, and more towards the sides where the curved top tub is shallow. That is plenty for lettuce, herbs and leafy greens to grow without touching the tub above.
What can I grow on each level?
Put herbs and salad greens in the top tub. It gets the sun, it sits at about chest height, and 23 cm of potting mix is plenty for basil, chives, thyme, oregano, rocket and lettuce. Keeping it shallow also keeps it light up high.
Put plants that like a break from the sun in the bottom tub, which the tub above partly shades. Silverbeet, spinach, kale, parsley, coriander and mint all cope with some shade, and a 35 cm or 41 cm bottom tub gives root veg like beetroot room to size up.
Which size and bottom tub should I pick?
Pick the Large (157 x 60 cm, 125 cm tall) for a full herb and salad garden, or the Compact (81 x 60 cm, 125 cm tall) when floor space is tight. The top tub is always 23 cm deep. You choose the bottom tub, 35 cm or 41 cm, and the litres below are potting mix for both tubs together:
- 35 cm bottom tub: Large 330 litres in total (220 + 110), Compact 165 litres (110 + 55)
- 41 cm bottom tub: Large 380 litres in total (270 + 110), Compact 190 litres (135 + 55)
Wheels are available with the 35 cm bottom tub.
Can I wheel it into the sun?
Yes, with the 35 cm bottom tub. Pick With wheels and it sits on castors with brakes, so you can roll it into the sun in winter, out of the heat in summer, and put the brakes on to hold it still. The planting heights stay at 50 cm and 125 cm on wheels. Move it into position before you fill it; after that, small moves to follow the sun are what the wheels are for. Set it on firm, level ground and brake it before you let go.
We only fit wheels to the 35 cm bottom tub. A 41 cm bottom tub plus the 23 cm top tub is too heavy to push once it is full of potting mix.
Will it fit a small garden, courtyard or balcony?
Yes, that is what it is for. The Compact takes up 81 x 60 cm of floor, so it suits a courtyard, patio or balcony, and the Large is 157 x 60 cm. Both stand on four legs, so you get two tubs for the floor space of one. A full bed is heavy, so on a balcony check the weight limit with your building manager before you fill it.
Is the top tub too high to reach?
The top tub sits at 125 cm, around chest height for most adults, so herbs and greens are right in front of you. If you would rather have everything at waist height, our 80 cm raised garden bed is the one.
What is it made from?
Timber. The legs, frame and boxes are MicroPro H3 treated pine, and each tier has a recycled plastic tub that holds the potting mix and keeps the moisture off the timber. The only metal is the bolts and screws and, if you choose wheels, the castors. Being timber, you can also paint it any colour to suit your garden.
How does it get to me?
We build it in our Lawnton workshop and deliver it assembled across South East Queensland, then put it in place for you. Pick your size, bottom tub depth and wheels above and it arrives ready to plant.

What do I fill it with?
Quality potting mix straight into the tub — no base layers or crushed rock needed. Capacity: Large: 35cm bottom + 23cm top = 330 litres, 41cm bottom + 23cm top = 380 litres. Compact: 35cm bottom + 23cm top = 165 litres, 41cm bottom + 23cm top = 190 litres. In our SEQ delivery area we can even deliver it filled and ready to plant — add the Potting Mix Fill service. Full step-by-step: how to fill your raised garden bed.
How deep should your garden bed be?
23 cm is the budget pick — ideal for herbs, flowers, lettuce and other shallow-rooted plants (it dries out quickest, so it likes part shade or regular watering). 35 cm is the sweet spot most customers choose — handles tomatoes, capsicums and most veggies while holding moisture well. 41 cm suits root veg like carrots and potatoes, plus potted citrus — best moisture retention, heaviest when full.
Can I move it once it’s set up?
Empty, it’s an easy two-person lift. If you’ll want to chase the sun through the seasons, the wheels version rolls on braked castors — switch to it under “Choose a variation” above.
Will my deck or balcony get wet underneath?
The tub drains through 12 mm holes at every corrugation. On a deck or balcony, add the Drainage Capture kit — it channels overflow away or straight into a watering can.
Will the timber rot or attract termites?
It’s arsenic-free MCA-treated pine — built to resist both. If it’s going on grass or soil, we recommend a paver or our protective feet under each leg to break the moisture and termite highway. Full guide: Care & Maintenance.
How often will I need to water?
Shallower tubs (23 cm) dry out faster in full sun; 35–41 cm hold moisture longer. The drip watering kit with timer makes it set-and-forget.
