A small timber planter box on legs, 81 cm long and 60 cm wide, with the planting surface at 50 cm, about knee height. It fits a balcony, a courtyard or the odd corner beside the shed.
We build it in our Lawnton workshop and deliver it assembled across South East Queensland, ready to fill.
Is a small planter box big enough to grow in?
Yes, if you pick the right tub. The 41 cm tub holds 135 litres of potting mix, enough root room for potatoes or carrots, and some customers grow a dwarf fruit tree in one. The 35 cm tub (110 litres) suits tomatoes and most veggies, and the 23 cm tub (55 litres) suits herbs and salad greens. The 33 cm slatted option swaps the tub for a flat timber slat base, so your potted plants sit inside it.
Why knee height?
At 50 cm it stays low enough to sit under a window or a balcony rail. It stands on legs rather than in the ground, so you can move it when your garden changes.
The frame is arsenic-free MCA treated hoop pine, and a recycled plastic tub holds the potting mix and the water so the timber stays dry. Want it to roll? There's a wheeled version. Want climbers? Try the compact planter box with a trellis.

What do I fill it with?
Quality potting mix straight into the tub. No base layers or crushed rock needed. Capacity: 23cm Depth = 55 litres, 35cm Depth = 110 litres, 41cm Depth 135 litres. In our SEQ delivery area we can even deliver it filled and ready to plant: add the Potting Mix Fill service. Full step-by-step: how to fill your raised garden bed.
How deep should your garden bed be?
23 cm is the budget pick, ideal for herbs, flowers, lettuce and other shallow-rooted plants (it dries out quickest, so it likes part shade or regular watering). 35 cm is the sweet spot most customers choose: it handles tomatoes, capsicums and most veggies while holding moisture well. 41 cm suits root veg like carrots and potatoes, plus potted citrus. It holds moisture best and is the heaviest when full.
Can I move it once it’s set up?
Empty, it’s an easy two-person lift. If you’ll want to chase the sun through the seasons, the wheels version rolls on braked castors: tap + Wheels under Mix & Match above.
Will my deck or balcony get wet underneath?
The tub has drainage holes in the base, so water drains out underneath. On a deck or balcony, add the Drainage Capture kit: it channels overflow away or straight into a watering can.
Will the timber rot or attract termites?
It’s arsenic-free MCA treated hoop pine, built to resist both. If it’s going on grass or bare ground, we recommend a paver or our protective feet under each leg to break the moisture and termite highway. Full guide: Care & Maintenance.
How often will I need to water?
Shallower tubs (23 cm) dry out faster in full sun; 35–41 cm hold moisture longer. The drip watering kit with timer makes it set-and-forget.
