An heirloom tomato is a variety that has been grown and passed down through generations, typically for at least 50 years. They are open-pollinated, which means bees and wind do the pollinating naturally, and you can save the seeds to grow the exact same tomato again next year.
This is different from a hybrid tomato (the kind you usually find at the supermarket), where the seeds will not reliably produce the same fruit.
Why do gardeners love heirloom tomatoes?
- Flavour. Heirlooms are usually grown for taste rather than shelf life or uniform appearance. Many have a richness and complexity that commercial varieties do not.
- Variety. They come in a huge range of shapes, sizes and colours, from deep purple to bright yellow to almost black. Growing a mix makes a beautiful and delicious harvest.
- History. Part of the appeal is that you are growing something with a story, a variety that gardeners have cared for and shared across generations.
Which heirloom tomatoes grow well in South East Queensland?
- Brandywine: large, pink, intensely flavoured. Suits an indeterminate bed with good support.
- Tommy Toe: a small cherry variety that produces prolifically. Very popular in Queensland gardens.
- Black Krim: a dark, rich, slightly smoky flavour. Great for slicing.
- Yellow Pear: small, pear-shaped and very sweet. Kids love them.
Heirlooms do best in a raised bed with a quality premium potting mix, consistent watering and good support for the taller vining varieties. See our guide to determinate vs indeterminate tomatoes to pick the right type for your setup.
